High-altitude wind power is expected to help Saudi Arabia solve the problem of electricity

High-altitude wind turbines are not a new idea, researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology have begun investigating the technology to provide clean electricity for the Middle East. Specifically, the researchers identified the most favorable areas for the development of high-altitude wind power generation systems in parts of Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Researchers use data from wind farm data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) project to determine areas where altitude can provide consistent winds.

"The best height of a turbine varies with region and time," says the first author of the research paper. "In general, airborne wind energy resources increase with altitude."

The natural variability found in high altitudes can also be matched by kites, which can change their height to take advantage of the highest level to provide the most favorable wind speed. The current kite technology can allow wind energy from a height of 2 to 3 kilometers. But with the development of technology, wind turbines may begin to enter a higher level, will get stronger wind energy.

The researchers also revealed that "our work may help Saudi Arabia to accelerate the realization of the 2030 renewable energy program through wind power technology across the future."
