India will impose a 7.5% import tariff on PV modules

According to reports, the Indian government is considering a 7.5% tax on imported PV modules. From January to September 2007, India purchased one-third of China's $ 8 billion worth of goods.

India's solar energy industry relies heavily on imported PV modules, of which about 89% are from abroad while 85% of these are from China. These imported products are not currently taxed, but may be reclassified as electric motors with import duties.

It is reported that India's Ministry of Finance is considering the New Energy and Renewable Energy (MNRE) requirements for the import of solar panels for taxation. Upcoming auction items will be taxed, not the items already won.

India recently announced a $ 1.7 billion solar manufacturing plan to expand its domestic manufacturing, and plans to impose tariffs on solar cells.

If these changes are implemented, it will hit those low-bid project developers. Higher component costs have increased bid rates, and import duties may further raise costs.
