The new installed capacity of wind power will break 60 GW in 2020

On April 25, the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) issued the "2018 Global Wind Power Report" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report"). The “Report” provides a summary of the global installed capacity of wind power in 2017 and forecasts the global wind power industry in 2018-2022.

The "Report" predicts that in 2018, the global new installed capacity will be basically the same as in 2017 and is expected to be 52.9 GW. In 2019, the world's new wind power capacity will increase by leaps and bounds, and will exceed 60 GW in 2020. By 2022, cumulative wind capacity will exceed 840 GW.

For the steady growth in 2018, GWEC analysis was mainly due to the record increase in installed capacity of wind power in India last year, adding more than 4 GW. Therefore, taking into account the lack of continuity in India's wind power policy, the wind power market in India will have a smooth transition this year. In addition, the installed capacity in the European market will also be less than in previous years.

However, GWEC predicts that the industry will resume strong growth starting in 2019. According to forecasts, the newly installed capacity in 2019 will increase from 52.9 GW in 2018 to 57.5 GW, and will continue to exceed 60 GW from 2020.

“The global financial crisis in 2008 caused the annual average installed capacity of wind power market in the world from 2009 to 2013 to be about 40 GW.” Looking back in previous years, GWEC stated, “In 2014, the industry exceeded the 50 GW threshold for the first time. Then, due to In 2015, China's ultra-high installed capacity, the industry set a new record of 60 GW installed capacity. The next three years, the global wind power market maintained at 52-54 GW of 'new normal'.

The GWEC report predicts that the global wind power market will resume growth in 2019 and 2020. At the start of the new decade, new capacity will once again exceed 60 GW and continue to grow, but the growth rate will slow down.

“We expect that by the end of 2022, the cumulative installed capacity of wind power will reach 840 GW.” According to GWEC, the cumulative installed capacity at the end of 2017 was 539.1 GW. According to this calculation, the installed capacity of wind power will increase by 56% in the next five years.
