Tesla recommends using renewable energy and microgrids to power Greek islands

Several islands in Greece are relatively remote and rely heavily on fossil fuels to power their grids. When Tesla met with the Greek government, it suggested using microgrids and renewable energy to modernize the country's power grids in many Mediterranean islands to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

For many years, Tesla has accumulated some experience in building microgrids for remote islands using solar panels and their energy storage systems. In 2016, Tesla deployed a 1.4 MW solar array and a 6 MWh energy storage system on Ta'u Island in American Samoa, including 60 Tesla Powerpacks, which make these The island can significantly reduce the amount of diesel used by generators. Since then, the company has deployed many similar systems in Samoa, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Now they want to do something similar in Greece.

Greek Environment and Energy Minister GeorgeStathakis confirmed last week that they had met with Tesla to discuss the deployment of microgrids in the Greek Islands. And issued the following statement:

“Today, the Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. George Stathakis, met with Tesla executives to exchange views on improving the island’s dependence on fossil fuels, especially those that could not be connected to the mainland grid in recent years. And the climate improvement program plans to gradually abandon the fuel plant and switch to renewable energy (RES). However, the randomness of energy generated by photovoltaic or wind energy has led to a huge demand for energy storage and recovery of modern network management technologies.

The continuous development of technology has actually reduced the cost of energy storage. At the same time, in Greece, competition for renewable energy investment has also led to a significant decline in energy production costs. Therefore, in addition to being good for the environment, it is also economically feasible. It can be seen that the Greek government's cooperation with Tesla is very beneficial. ”

According to reports, Tesla has proposed a pilot project in the region to showcase their microgrid systems. The government hopes to set up the pilot project on the island of Limnos, which is designed to install a large solar array and combine it with energy storage facilities to store energy during the day for use when there is no sunlight at night.

In fact, since last year, Tesla has started to cooperate with the Greek government to build a motor R&D center using the local strong electrical engineering talent reserve.
