Introducing China's transmission technology, transforming Egypt's old power grid

Workers work on the construction site of the EETC 500 kV transmission project in Egypt
The project has a total length of 1,210 kilometers and covers the most densely populated areas of Egypt.
At the beginning of January, the two sections of Bruce-Samano and Shamanno-Benha in Egypt's EETC 500 kV transmission project successfully delivered electricity. The transmission project undertaken by a Chinese company is the first contracted project between China and Egypt, and is the largest transmission line project in Egypt with the highest voltage level and the widest coverage. After the completion of the project, it will greatly alleviate the shortage of electricity used in many places in Egypt, and drive the development of upstream and downstream industries. During the peak period, it will create about 7,000 jobs in Egypt, providing kinetic energy for promoting Egypt's economic development.
Driving from downtown Cairo to the north for about an hour, you can enter the famous Nile Delta area, which has given birth to Egypt's long and splendid civilization. On the way, you can see several high-rise "iron towers" pulling the wires across the Nile River and extending to the vast oasis. This "iron tower" is the Egyptian EETC 500 kV transmission project under the general contracting construction of China Power Technology Equipment Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "CLP Equipment Company").
“The days of power cuts will become a thing of the past, and transmission projects have changed the quality of our lives!” Talking about these “iron towers”, the locals praised them. According to our reporter, the project plans to build 15 separate 500 kV double-circuit exchange lines on the same tower, totaling 1,210 km. The line is distributed in the most dense delta area and south-central part of the Nile River. It is a supporting power transmission project for three new power stations in Egypt.
Egypt is the largest country in North Africa, but weak power infrastructure has caused power cuts to occur. Such problems have been plaguing the lives of Egyptians and restricting the development of the Egyptian economy. In January 2016, under the “Belt and Road” framework, China State Grid Corporation and the Egyptian Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy signed an EETC project contract, which was built by the China State Grid Corporation's CLP equipment company in EPC mode.
After the newly-built transmission line continuously supplies electric energy from the power plant to the substations in various parts of Egypt, the stable electric energy will quickly provide a strong guarantee for the production and living of Egyptian farmers. It is understood that the project has also created a number of records at the same time. It is the transmission project with the highest tower height, the heaviest tower weight, the longest river crossing distance and the shortest construction period of the same type in Egypt.
“The professionalism of Chinese companies has made me admire.” Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Shekel, affirmed the construction standards and quality of the project. He said, "The implementation of the project introduced China's advanced transmission technology and concepts, helped transform the existing old grid in Egypt, and the quality of life of the people has changed."
An inaccessible desert, because the arrival of Chinese builders has become lively
The transmission line project in Egypt is highly systemic, technically difficult, and the planned construction period is short. The difficulty of the tower line is not small. The complex field environment, violent sandstorms and hot weather bring challenges to the construction.
In the summer sun, the temperature of the tower is as high as 60 degrees Celsius. "Unless the soles are thick enough, the general shoes don't dare to go up and down the tower." The project workers said that in order to catch up with the construction period, the builders of the two countries used the construction work in the morning and evening. It is often necessary to get up at three or four in the morning. The desert is inaccessible, because the arrival of Chinese builders has become lively.
In the eyes of the locals, Chinese builders are not only greedy, hard-working, but also "skilled." When the construction team uses the drone to “needle the needle” between the towers, it often attracts many curious villagers nearby to “see the excitement”.
At present, the overall completion progress of the transmission project is about 80%, and the project will be fully completed in the first half of 2019. By then, 15 transmission lines will run through Egypt from north to south along the wide Nile River to improve the lives of residents along the route. Liu Guanghui, manager of CLP Equipment's Egypt branch, said that after the project is fully completed, it will greatly enhance the power transmission capacity of the gas power station in the Nile Delta, comprehensively enhance the safety of the overall grid structure of the Egyptian State Grid, and promote the economic development of Egypt and the rational use of electricity and energy. Significant.
The significance of the project is not limited to the power sector, but also has a positive impact on the entire industry chain. After the upgrading of the power grid, it will promote the development of upstream and downstream industries such as energy, electrical equipment and raw materials in Egypt and the Middle East. According to the plan of the Egyptian government, Egypt will continue to vigorously promote the construction of transmission projects. In the future, it plans to connect with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Libya and other neighboring countries to achieve the remaining domestic electricity output.
"Leave the project, and also left the Chinese experience and local people who know the technology."
The landing of the EETC 500 kV transmission project in Egypt is another important result of the “going out” of Chinese power companies. Some local media said that Chinese enterprises have obvious technological advantages and rich experience. In the process of cooperation, they also cultivate many outstanding professionals for Egypt. They hope to continue to cooperate with China in capacity production and look forward to learning more "Chinese experience."
In order to learn Chinese technology, the Egyptian transmission company has also arranged dozens of excellent engineers from all regions to China for training, researching China's current advanced live working practices and personnel standardization procedures, and conducting standardized live working demonstrations and actual operations. Operational training. From the beginning, it was completely constructed by the Chinese, and the Chinese took the construction of the Egyptians. Finally, some of the procedures were completely handed over to the Egyptians for construction and the Chinese were accepted. Through a step-by-step approach, the Chinese construction team has trained a large number of experienced managers and construction personnel in the local area, and also solved the employment problems of some Egyptians, which was appreciated by the Egyptian government.
Shekel feels that Chinese companies have left their projects in Egypt, leaving locals with Chinese experience and technology.
