Egypt's renewable energy installed capacity exceeds 6,000 MW

According to Mohamed el-Khayat, executive chairman of the Egyptian New Energy and Renewable Energy Administration (NREA), Egypt's renewable energy has reached 6,000 megawatts of capacity, of which 2,000 megawatts comes from solar and wind. The remaining two-thirds are mainly from hydropower.

In a year away from the government deadline, the North African country has achieved its goal of adding 20% of renewable energy to the country's electricity mix.

According to the "2018 Global Wind Energy Report", Egypt has installed 380 MW of wind power capacity in the past year.

Major renewable energy projects underway in Egypt include the Benban Solar Complex, which is scheduled to go into production in October 2019.

According to el-Khayat, growth is attributed to recent policies, such as the Independent Power Producer (IPP) policy, which they are currently joining the industry and signing a power purchase agreement with the Egyptian Power Transmission Corporation (EETC).

By September 2019, the government is developing regulations on the direct production and sale of electricity to consumers.

One of the key points of the new rules is that no company is allowed to monopolize electricity production or sales and negotiate electricity prices directly with consumers. The new law will open the market to the private sector and encourage healthy competition.
