How many smart poles are needed in the 5G era? Startled after reading

In the 5G era, base stations are becoming increasingly dense, and urban site resources will face unprecedented tension. Regardless of factors such as site location, height, and spacing, street lights are the best carriers for 5G base station equipment.

In the 5G era, street lights and base stations are inherently matched.

However, if the base station and street light are simply and rudely combined into one as shown in the following pictures, it will not only be a disaster to the urban environment, but also leave endless hidden dangers for later maintenance and network upgrade.

As a result, a new kind of multi-functional species that integrates communication, lighting, monitoring, environmental monitoring, charging, intelligent transportation, information release, etc., emerged as a smart pole. The smart pole can not only solve the problem of obtaining the site of the 5G base station, but also greatly reduce the social cost, and also bring visual beauty to the city.

In the future, the smart pole is an indispensable key infrastructure for smart cities, and it is also one of the labels of the future intelligent era.

Today, the industry agrees that smart poles are an inevitable trend in the 5G era.

But there is a question that has been entwined in my heart, and I haven't got an answer for a while, that is-

How many smart poles will be needed in the future? How many 5G base stations will be hung on the smart poles?

To this day, I see a smart pole plan from Hongkong Telecom ...

In Hong Kong, there are currently about 226,200 street light poles. The distance between the two poles is about 30-60 meters, most of which are within 50 meters.

So how many of these light poles will be used to mount 5G equipment?

According to the plan of Hongkong Telecom, two AAU devices will be mounted on one light pole in the future, which belong to two communities and cover different directions. The coverage area of each community is 150-180 meters.

This means that for every distance between six light poles, one light pole needs to be used to mount two AAU devices in order to achieve continuous full coverage of the entire city street.

Calculate, that is to say, about one-sixth of the 226,200 light poles in Hong Kong will be used to mount 5G base station equipment.

A little Hong Kong, only one operator, needs so many light poles to mount 5G base stations!

Considering that the smart pole is limited in terms of load bearing and space, it cannot meet the equipment sharing of several operators like the big tower. Therefore, the construction form of the smart pole station in the future is estimated to be deployed independently by one operator and one pole.

Imagine the total number of light poles that 3-4 operators will need in China in the future.

This number must be amazing!

And because most of the traditional street lights cannot meet the requirements for mounting 5G equipment in terms of load bearing, power supply, transmission, etc., there will also be a large number of street lights that need to be rebuilt or newly built, which is also a very huge project!

The future of the smart pole industry is promising!
