New Wind Turbine Technology: High Efficiency at Low Wind Speeds

A study by the Finnish National Technical Research Center shows that, compared with existing wind turbines, the new technology can achieve higher towers and larger rotors, thus ensuring the efficiency of new-generation wind turbines at low wind speeds.

New technologies will enable turbines to be more freely sited in the future, for example in forest areas, and can increase their competitiveness. Although the investment cost of new technology is higher than before, its potential value has increased five-fold compared with the old technology.

Based on the same cost assumptions, the new technology can cover the entire Finnish electricity consumption (about 86 TWh), while the old technology's potential is limited to about 16 TWh. In addition, land use restrictions have no significant impact on the assessment of the potential of new technologies because it allows economically viable power generation at more sites.

"Finland has sufficient wind power. Technology and land use restrictions affect the available wind power potential, which is annual power generation. In practice, wind power is designed to cover part of the electricity consumption, and large-scale use of wind power will require the entire power system to adopt. New solutions,” said Erkka Rinne, a researcher at the Finnish National Technical Research Center.

The Finnish National Technical Research Center is developing the most advanced technology that takes into account the environmental impact and benefits of tools and fine tuning through the virtual modeling of wind turbines.
