Utilizing solar drones to build airborne local area networks

Recently, the reporter learned from the Third Academy of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation that the institute proposed a flying cloud project based on the adjacent space solar drone to construct an airborne local area network, which can realize long-term communication guarantee for large-scale and remote users. Up to now, Feiyun Engineering has successfully completed multi-station autonomous flight verification, successfully carried out communication application verification based on space-based platform, and achieved phased results.
Experts said that the adjacent space solar drone is a new type of platform that uses solar energy as its power source, independently acquires energy from the outside during flight, and can fly continuously for several days or even months. The flying altitude can reach the adjacent space and has a high flying height. The characteristics of long battery life, easy to use and maintain, etc., have the characteristics of “quasi-satellite” in a certain sense, which is a hot spot in current international research.
It is reported that the solar drone developed by the Third Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology has reduced the flight control difficulty of the UAV while achieving high lift-to-drag ratio aerodynamic performance. The ultra-light high-strength composite material structure has been adopted to enhance the wind resistance of the UAV. Environmental adaptability, the use of high-efficiency energy power system, greatly enhance the mission reliability of the long-haul flight of the drone.
"Through the matching and coordination design of each subsystem, the solar drone can be widely used in emergency communication support, remote sensing mapping, meteorological detection and many other fields with its outstanding flying height and long life time. It has broad application prospects. Zhang Hongwen, dean of the Third Academy of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, said.
Zhang Hongwen introduced that Feiyun Engineering uses solar-powered UAVs to carry over-the-air LAN communication equipment, which can provide network coverage that is much larger than that of terrestrial base stations and “concomitant” network access services that are not restricted by the area, so as to realize inter-regional user information interconnection. It also provides transmission links for user's IP data, voice, video and other business data; it can provide effective communication network coverage solutions for remote mountainous areas, small islands and other areas where it is difficult to set up base stations, and can also be used in natural disasters and regional communication. Under the condition of damaged facilities, the communication capacity of the disaster area can be quickly restored.
In addition, the UAVs in different coverage areas form inter-machine information interaction through the relay link, which can further realize a wider range of network and communication coverage.
