Solid-state lighting technology integration to promote the transformation of the automotive lighting industry

According to relevant survey data, solid-state lighting (SSL) technology accounted for 57% of the automotive lighting market share in 2017, and this number is expected to reach 85% in 2023.

Yole Developpement, a market research organization, pointed out that the total value of the automotive lighting market in 2017 was 27.4 billion US dollars, and it is expected to reach 37.3 billion US dollars by 2023, during which the compound annual growth rate is 5.3%.

Pars Mukish, manager of the SSL and display division at Yole, said: "The growth of the automotive lighting market is driven by the decline in natural LED costs and the standardization and optimization of LED modules, driving more vehicles to be equipped with this technology."

With the integration of LED technology, lighting has evolved from a basic function to a feature of the automotive industry with high value potential. With the lighting design and more features provided by LED technology, major manufacturers now have the opportunity to stand out. Pierole Boulay, Yole's solid-state lighting and display team analyst, said: "This is especially true for external lighting, which has undergone tremendous changes in technology and supply chain. The integration of new SSL technology is changing the headlights and RCL systems and Its applications are beginning to offer more design flexibility, higher power and more intelligence."

With the decline in cost, as well as improvements in power efficiency, brightness, and package size, the popularity of LEDs is increasing. The first full-LED headlamps that have been commercialized on luxury cars since 2008 have penetrated into the compact or C-class vehicle market in 2012 and are currently being commercialized in emerging markets.

Yole said that almost all car manufacturers and first-tier parts suppliers have developed full-LED headlamp systems, which have become an indispensable technology in the automotive field. Laser and OLED light sources are still emerging technologies, but they can also support the development of new features.
